How Many Turns Around the Sun

The first bowl resounded to the heart.  The second bowl, slightly larger, expresses the chakra of the soul.  The third bowl, she said, was just ‘bigger’ than the rest.

The first and smallest bowl played by his granddaughter, the second a longtime friend and officiant of the celebration.  The third, another life long friend for most of his barely 70 years.

I’m not sure if it’s an outcome of the celebration of life I attended with Hugh - for his friend Chris.  It was the most beautiful celebration and acknowledgement of a life so obviously ‘lived well’.  It made me feel as though I knew him long before it was to end.

Perhaps it’s the deep reflection and experiencing his life through so many loving eyes.  Or it’s my own mortality and desire to share a life of love, kindness and deep impact with the world around me.  My family, my friends and those I am able to bring a smile, leave an imprint and make one small part of life better because I was here…  like Chris.

Whatever the reason or the source, I was inspired to write a poem in the middle of last night.  Never have I shared my poetry.  Well, not since I was sixteen.  Truth be told, I haven’t written one in years.

I choose to share it with you today.

How Many Turns Around the Sun

How many turns
Around the sun,
Eyes, they sparkle less,
Skin, it used to glow

A face with lines and lesser shine,
Chin hairs, they can’t be mine

I caught a glimpse just now
With eyes that caress my soul,
Lips, they kiss with deep love still
A heart that beats by its own will

If not for mirrors
Or lying eyes,
These turns around the sun
Should be half at least, or so it seems

Alas I jest
I wouldn’t trade a single day
Nor the hair,
Grey and gone astray

Life is full, I know
Of love and loss, disappointment too

Yet here I am
Still hoping for,
As many more
Turns around the sun.

I initially shared this with only an intimate few, before it became certain, I was to share it with you.  I hope you enjoy it and invite you to share it with someone you love.
